Edinburgh Zoo’s Giant Lanterns

Six years ago, we visited a winter event in Edinburgh, the Giant Lanterns of China at Edinburgh Zoo. This was such a unique experience it remains one of our all-time favourite light trails. Then came Covid, lockdowns and a long hiatus — so when we heard the lanterns were finally returning to Edinburgh, we couldn’t wait to go back and see if the magic was still there.

We’re happy to report that not only is it back, it may well be better than ever.

The 2019 “Lost Worlds” theme has been replaced with a stunning nautical, under-the-sea theme, and the zoo is completely transformed after dark into an awe-inspiring world of light and colour. There’s something undeniably special about being inside Edinburgh Zoo at night, and from the moment you arrive, the sense of excitement builds.

The Giant Lanterns open shortly after the zoo closes at 4pm, and we booked a 5:30pm entry slot. Parking was reasonable at just £2, and even on the walk from the main car park we caught glimpses of this year’s underwater experience. It’s impressive from the outside — but once you pass through the turnstiles, you step into another world entirely.

The trail begins with dramatic impact: giant squid, towering sharks, turtles and other sea life, all created as intricate, handcrafted lanterns. This opening section immediately sets the tone for the evening. We’ve visited many winter light trails over the years, but this is by far one of the most spectacular and unique.

There are over 600 handmade lanterns along the trail, some standing more than 20 feet tall, created by an incredibly skilled team and illuminated by more than 12,000 LED bulbs. What really captures your attention is the sheer scale and detail of the displays, combined with the incredible use of colour. Walking through the first light tunnel — with dozens of glowing jellyfish floating overhead — genuinely felt like stepping into an underwater setting.

It wouldn’t be a visit to Edinburgh Zoo without penguins. While the real residents were tucked up in bed for the night, we loved seeing the lantern penguins perched on ice, overlooking the actual penguin enclosure — a lovely touch that ties the event back to the zoo itself.

As we continued through the trail, we encountered a breathtaking range of aquatic life, from whales, sea turtles, coral and jellyfish, to scenes inspired closer to home. One of our favourite areas featured much-loved Scottish seabirds, including puffins, set against a huge lighthouse lantern. There was also a striking display of the endangered flapper skate, one of the world’s largest rays — a brilliant way to spotlight lesser-known native species.

This trail is packed with wow moments, and the look of pure excitement on our children’s faces was worth the entrance fee alone. Around every corner there are photo opportunities, interactive elements and something to delight all ages — teens included, which is no small achievement.

There are so many incredible exhibits on this mesmerising trail, but some of our personal highlights included the enormous 14-metre whale, which visitors can actually walk through, a towering giant crab looming over the pathway, and the finale — a magical journey through Atlantis. The variety on display is just as impressive as the craftsmanship itself.

We were completely transfixed as we wandered through the zoo, and the kids declared this their favourite light trail ever — praise indeed. It’s hard to believe these magnificent structures are lanterns, and they truly come alive once darkness falls. Each display is accompanied by information boards with fun, accessible facts, making the experience both engaging and educational for all ages.

Our Verdict

If you’re visiting Edinburgh this winter, Edinburgh Zoo’s Giant Lanterns should absolutely be on your to-do list. The atmosphere is magical, the experience feels adventurous, and there’s a real sense of not knowing what incredible sight awaits you next.

Seeing teenagers genuinely impressed is worth the ticket price alone, and this is a truly unique attraction that many visitors to Edinburgh might otherwise miss. If you’ve been considering a visit, don’t hesitate — book it and go. It’s a magical winter experience you won’t forget.
